Future calling: traditional landlines to switch to VoIP

27 August, 2019
Traditional ISDN and PSTN landline circuits will soon be a thing of the past. From next year, ISDN and PSTN will no longer be available to buy. By 2025, they’ll all be switched off, says Openreach.

So, what will happen to landlines?

The cessation of ISDN and PSTN doesn’t mean the end of landlines, as the UK will switch to VoIP.

What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for voice over internet protocol. Put simply, VoIP transmits voice over a digital network using the same protocols the internet follows.
Older phone systems will need to be changed when the switchover happens, but most new phone systems are VoiP enabled.

Typically, a VoIP phone system will come with a bundle package which can include:
Call minutes
Inclusive site-to-site calls
Softphone apps
The ability to have a landline number accessible on a mobile phone or laptop

VoiP systems offer businesses greater flexibility than traditional circuits. Users can be anywhere and take a call on their office number –great for giving customers continuity of service.

As your business grows, you can add new lines quickly. Once requested, simply plug a new handset into the system via some CAT5 cabling. Far more efficient than waiting to order a new ISDN channel from Openreach!

A concern to your business could be that your internet connection may not be reliable or fast enough to support VoiP. With a quick connectivity check, the right products can be installed to solve any issues.

If you want to get ahead of the game and switch to VoiP sooner, or you think you could benefit from a connectivity check, get in touch with AF’s Telecoms team.
