Prince Charles launches ‘Terra Carta’ to promote low-carbon future

13 January, 2021
Speaking at the One Planet Summit in France on 11th January 2021, HRH The Prince of Wales launched the ‘Terra Carta’ (Earth Charter).

The guiding mandate for Prince Charles’ Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), the Terra Carta seeks to establish a roadmap “towards an inspiring, inclusive, equitable, prosperous and sustainable future for the sake of present and future generations”.
The Terra Carta asks signatories to partake in almost 100 actions to become more sustainable by 2030 and is backed by several international institutions, such as HSBC and the Bank of America.

In the Terra Carta’s statement of intent, the voluntary commitments include:
- Supporting international agreements on climate
- Boodiversity and desertification
- Backing efforts to protect half of the planet by 2050,
- Making investment and financial flows consistent with a future of low greenhouse gas emissions.
“The 'Terra Carta' offers the basis of a recovery plan that puts Nature, People and Planet at the heart of global value creation – one that will harness the precious, irreplaceable power of Nature combined with the transformative innovation and resources of the private sector”, Prince Charles said.

His Royal Highness is encouraging business to provide “practical leadership to this common project”. As well as looking to create and accelerate sustainable industries, the mandate also asks signatories to consider sustainable innovations and practices within your business.
