Buy or hire? How hiring equipment and plant can benefit your business

AF’s Machinery team are often asked about the benefits of hire vs purchase of machinery and plant equipment.

“One advantage of hiring equipment in when you need it, is the minimal upfront investment. This helps to manage cost and cash flow,” says Matt Evans, AF’s Machinery Product Manager. “It also means that you can use up-to-date equipment with zero service and maintenance costs. Something you might not know is that hired-in equipment can be off-hired when you don’t need it. Financially, your farm business can usually deduct the full cost of hire charges as a business expense. So hire is a real benefit to any business model”,

We asked Matt some of your key questions to help you to make the best decisions for your business.

What can I hire through AF?

How does the equipment get to my farm?

Suppliers tend to offer a delivered service or a branch collection option - our buyer will let you know your nearest branch. For delivered equipment this will be priced as part of your quote and will be delivered to your farm as required.

What if I don’t know what I need for the job?

If you’re not sure of the extract piece of machinery you need, AF has dedicated representatives who can come to you and advise the best option - at no extra charge. Especially when powered access is needed, a site survey is always recommended to ensure the correct equipment for the job.

Do I need to insure the equipment?

All hired-in plant or equipment from AF must be added to your own insurance policy. We’ll let you know the machine details and insurance value for you to pass on to your broker or insurance company. We’ll also send you a DocuSign email, which needs to be signed and sent back for confirmation.

What do I need to do when I’ve finished with the hire?

When you’ve finished with the hire, you need to call AF to off-hire the equipment. Even if you’ve booked it for a week’s hire, the supplier won’t automatically off-hire it for you and will keep charging you. The team will deal with this on your behalf and log the details onto our system to avoid invoice variances.

Top Tips

Accidents happen - if you damage any hire equipment, you must inform the supplier or AF straight away. Once the machinery is off-hire and returned to the suppliers workshop, it will be fully inspected. Any damage will be billed to your AF account.

It’s always a good idea to take photographs of any damage to avoid disputes over the extent of the damage and associated costs.

Always fill the machine with fuel before returning it, or the supplier will charge you. Ensure you order some red diesel from the Fuel team to so you pay the AF rates.
