Jon Duffy joins industry leaders in vital discussion on exploring mental health in agriculture

01 June, 2020
Every week a farmer will take their life. It is a statistic that is shocking, sad and one that the industry is desperate to change. AF CEO Jon Duffy joined an esteemed panel to discuss the challenges facing farmers today and the support mechanisms that are needed for those struggling. On the panel were Defra minister Victoria Prentis, Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman, Melinda Raker of farming mental health charity YANA (You Are Not Alone), Matthew Hubbard, Lloyds Banking Group’s ambassador for the East of England and Stuart Roberts, deputy president of the National Farmers’ Union.
Jon said, “I was honoured to be asked by Archant and Lloyds Banking Group to contribute to this vital debate. There are some fantastic organisations which are providing vital work in ensuring every farmer goes home at the end of the day happy and healthy but clearly there’s still work to be done. We recognise the importance of good mental health at AF which is why we have trained all our managers so that we support each other as much as we can. By investing in people and creating communities which support each other we can remove the stigma of depression, champion good mental health and ensure no farmer feels they are alone.”
